Shopping carts act as a catalog of merchandise for sale, typically a 'buy' or 'add to cart' button will exist to add the selected item as a line item for an invoice. Once you have added items into your shopping cart / ecommerce software, you can then view the cart to see all the items in it, their quantities and a subtotal for each line with a grand total for all the merchandise. A merchant can then use other calculations for specials, coupons or gift codes that will alter the grand total. Most shopping carts offer all this functionality as well as foreign currencies, tax rates, shipping and much more.

This is where merchant account processing comes in. Once the order has been totaled and all fees and reductions have been calculated, a grand total is handed off to the payment gateway of the merchant account provider. A payment gateway is an internet address that the shopping cart reaches out to and sends information encrypted (scrambled beyond detection or translation) for approval or a decline. That is a bit simplified so lets break it down. The shopping cart software is used as the user shops. They add items and redeem coupons and add on shipping and/or insurance. As these items are processed by the e-commerce (shopping cart) software, the total cost is being recalculated showing the shopper a grand total. When the shopper is ready to check out, he final step is entering the personal information of the shopper as well as the payment information.

The shopping cart will typically have a payment 'module' configured with the (shopping cart owners) company information and merchant account data. When the shopper submits the order for processing, the shopping cart sends the merchant account data along with the users address, credit card number, name, expiration date and more to the merchant account provider. The provider receives that data in a secure manner (encryption) and passes that onto their payment center where balances are checked and fund transfers are requested. The total is either approved or declined due to numerous issues, and if approved, the funds are transferred from the issuing bank (of the credit card) to the merchants account to be later deposited into their bank account.

Each payment gateway is slightly different from one another. Some use tokens, some have an entire Application Programming Interface (API) and others create a simple buy now button that handles most of those details for the merchant. Configuring the payment gateway to interact with a given merchant account provider is often a source of confusion and frustration. Due to many nuances and details between the shopping cart software used (there are thousands) and payment gateway of the merchant account provider (again thousands if not millions), this process is not always straight forward for the merchant account holder.

We have had success getting many shopping carts to interact with our payment gateways and can offer your shopping cart the same level of success. Are you frustrated troubleshooting a payment module to work with your merchant account provider's payment gateway? We can help in more ways than one.
